Our senior partner, Dr. Eduardo L. Ferder, has been invited to the IUMI´s (International Union of Marine Insurance) Conference which took place in Copenhagen, between the 9th and 12th of September of 2007.
The IUMI is a forum to exchange experience, information and statistical data on marine insurance matters; to discuss legislative issues, loss prevention and safety measures; to debate, in an objective and conducive way, the challenges and opportunities facing marine insurers.
 IUMI's role as an international organisation within the framework of today's complex marketplace with its interwoven interests of ship owners, shippers, charterers, Classification Societies, traders etc. has led to further connections and close cooperation with governmental and non-governmental organisations and agencies.
As a result, during the post-war period IUMI has considerably strengthened its ties with bodies such as UNCTAD, ICC, CMI, IMO, ICS, IACS etc. by appointing Liaison Officers and Observers who closely follow the operations of these organisations and report back to the Council.
The cornerstone of IUMI's activities is its Annual Conference which takes place in a different host-country each September. It is, in all respects, the widest possible International Marine Insurance Forum and brings together marine insurers from markets around the world.
Highlights of the Conference include:
- Presentations by IUMI's Technical Committees on current research;
- Statistical data and analysis of marine casualties;
- Discussion of legal issues;
- Review of new methods of transportation;
- An insurance perspective on how various commodities are transported; and
- The developments on both national and international fronts.
In this opportunity, the Conference took place in Copenhagen, with the assistance of almost 500 participants belonging to Marine Insurance Companies and Underwriters, members of National Insurance Associations of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Bulgaria, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea Republic, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and USA.
Argentina is not a member of the IUMI and we were the only participants from the country, as special guests.
 The central topic of the Conference has been: “Marine Insurance – The Technical, Financial and Human Challenge”.
 Within this common theme, the Conference included subjects as Solvency and Marine Insurance, Global Warming, Cargo Accumulation, China market and the Cargo Insurance Industry, Misappropriation of cargo; Human error , operation error and loss of control;  and Pollution casualties, among many others.
